24 Character Strengths: Teamwork

We are all unique and we all have strengths which allow us to contribute to the world. In the early 2000’s, Dr. Martin Seligman and Dr. Christopher Peterson developed the VIA Character Strengths. Their research determined that there are 24 common character strengths that each of us possess to one degree or another, giving us a common language to use, but still recognizing that each of us is unique.

Each of these Character Strengths fall under one of six broad categories called Virtues. These Virtues and Character Strengths have proven to be universal across cultures and nations. Over the next few weeks, we will explore each of the 24 strengths that we all share, yet make you uniquely you!

Next we will look at the Virtue of Justice, which brings together those strengths that make life fair. This can manifest in equity, equality or need and strives for living and working together in harmony.

The Character Strength of Teamwork has a much broader definition that we typically see. In the context of a Character Strength, Teamwork implies acting in ways that benefit a group as a whole. This could apply to a group working on a project, your family, your nation or any other group that you consider yourself belonging to. For those with a signature strength of Teamwork, dedication, reliability and contribution are all consistent traits. They also tend to be more trusted and themselves have a more positive view of others.

The absence of Teamwork is selfishness or only being interested in individual goals or well being. Its opposite is excessive self interest or narcissism. In excess it manifests as exaggerated or over the top support for a group or cause. Understanding these opposites, absences and excesses can help us identify Teamwork in ourselves and in others.

With this broader view of Teamwork, where might you see or have the opportunity to use this strength more in your life? Are there areas in your life where you might find new ways to support or contribute to groups that you belong to? Look for ways to bring this strength into situations in more proactive and positive ways. We all have opportunities and abilities to contribute. Find yours today!
